April is National Poetry Month and I almost forgot to commemorate it before it’s over. I have been quite busy offline. I suppose it’s good form to announce my activities here. I’m terrible at self-promotion, but I must do it if I want to gain any traction in the literary world. (Sidebar: what the heck is the literary world? Is that even a thing non-writers know or care about?)
First my announcement: Two poems and one short story of mine have been accepted for publication! Squee! As they make their way to print – on paper or electronically – I will share them here.
The final edits are complete on my memoir about growing up with a heart condition and having two heart transplants, and I mean it this time. It’s done, over, Finis. I’m ready to start querying literary agents and the prospect has me petrified. I’ve consumed much of the month trying to finalize my book proposal.
I have engaged in some poetry related events for the month of April. The monthly poetry group which meets at the library has resumed, and I’ve enjoyed workshopping with them. A few talented local poets have held readings, and I was fortunate to attend a reading by Michigan’s own Poet Laureate Nandi Comer alongside Tommye Blount. Comer’s poetry book “Tapping Out” was available for purchase, and I am the proud owner of an autographed copy.
The online poetry community is robust and seems to be getting larger every day, or else I’m just late to the party and discovering things after everyone else. I’ve enjoyed listening to numerous online poetry readings from poets all over the country as they promote new or existing collections. Most recently, I’ve been obsessed with Diane Seuss. Her latest poetry collection, “Modern Poetry” is phenomenal. I’ve read my copy ragged already, and I’ve purchased some of her earlier books as well. I hear the echo of my own rural Michigan roots in her words, drawing me into the dirt roads and dive bars that populate her writing.
This year, I will be attending the annual LitFest at Blossom Heath Park in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. It will run from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2024. Many local poets will be reading their best work. Bring your own snacks and refreshments and have your own little picnic while you listen to their inspired voices.
