Can you believe that Mother's Day is only two weeks away? This year is flying by.
As a stepmother, I don’t usually get gifts for Mother’s Day, but I’m always open to receiving the gift of a book year-round. This year, I’m recommending the book “Breathtaking” by Jessica Fein as the perfect book for the mother, sister, or friend in your life. Or all three!
Book Description:
“At the age of five Jessica Fein’s daughter Dalia was diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease that would claim her life at 17. Before that moment came, and inspired by Dalia’s own insuppressible zest for life, Fein and her family would discover how to live in the present when the future can’t be fixed. In this heartfelt yet clear-eyed memoir, Fein maps both her journey to becoming an adoptive mom and the roller coaster ride of loving and caring for a terminally ill child, persevering when the simple act of taking a breath can become an act of courage. Through it all, she discovers the need to be both relentless advocate and calm presence, to show vulnerability as well as strength, and to allow joy to be louder than sorrow.”
I was lucky enough to receive an advance reader copy of the book, and this is my review from Goodreads:
“Breathtaking is a luminous tale of love and loss, grief and growth. The author captures the simultaneous pull of being a mother, a daughter, and a sister. Heartbreak and resilience are woven in overlapping layers to build the structure of a story about a family and the joy they find in each other. It will smash your heart into pieces then put it back together again. Anyone who is a mother, or has a mother, should read it.”
Breathtaking is available for pre-order now, with delivery in time for Mother’s Day. Order today at the links below.
FYI: I love Bookshop. You can choose an independently run bookstore of your choice to receive the commission from your order instead of giving your cash to a corporation. Added bonus: For the weekend of 4/27 & 4/28, Bookshop is offering free shipping!
