Today is the first Monday in March.
Spring is less than three weeks away!
The sun wasn’t up when I let the dogs out this morning, but as I sat with my teacup and oatmeal, he peeked one bright eye over the horizon. I think he winked at me to say, “I’m going to show up and glow up today.”
When the first brilliant rays touched the landscape, morning frost bejeweled everything the light touched, sparkling with glints of fire and ice. It’s still cold, barely eking above twenty degrees, but oh, how bright!

Our recent warmup melted all the snow, leaving us with what we affectionately call “mud season” here in Michigan. If you have dogs, you know what also comes with that. It’s a twofold gift of muddy pawprints all over the floor – unless you ambush them with a towel at the door – and the special presents the dogs made during the winter that disappeared into the snow. Now, the snow is gone and those stinky piles are melting into the mud. Time to get out the muck boots and a shovel.
There, encapsulated in this simple tableau, we have the state of the world simplified. At our feet, we have the muck and the yuck, but when we lift our eyes to the skies, we are bathed in glorious sunlight and bedazzled by beauty. Which one will get our focus? Both are real. And so is our choice.
Look up today. Seek out the sun. The days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer. Soon leaves will appear as birds begin their mating calls – Tinder in the trees. Flowers and hatchlings can’t be far behind.

Take a moment to just sit and rest and comfort yourself in the knowledge that the world goes on. Nature is going to do her thing with or without you, whether or not humans battle over ideology. Everything that isn’t Nature is made up. These words I’m writing at this moment are made up.
Humans create and they destroy as they pretend to have dominion over the Earth. And Nature couldn’t care less. The sun comes up and goes down. The Earth spins on its axis. Birds migrate, mate, and lay eggs. Flowers bloom.
To quote one of my favorite actors from one of my favorite movies, “Life finds a way.”
Go. Live life. It’s waiting for you. Don’t miss it.
