What an amazing photo of ALL THE MEDS as a turkey!

As I'm a solo person and my daughters are far away with their own families, I've done Thanksgiving alone many times.. I roast a Cornish game hen and make the usual veggies to go with it. Lots of cranberry sauce, too. I've already bought all the stuff. But-- just the other day a friend called to see if I would like to join them... so I will be making a pie this morning and going to be with a wonderful group of artists later. Feeling grateful not to be alone, again.

My efforts will be confined to putting a frozen pie in the oven and peeling potatoes while sitting down. Your dinner with friends sounds lovely. I considered inviting friends, but I've been sick for a week and the house looks like a tornado blew through. When I'm feeling better, I have a lot of cleaning to do. But today, I'm watching the parade, football, and the dog show.

I have to confess that the med turkey is not my creation. It has been circulating among the transplant community for several years. Turns out I'm not cooking anything this year. I have a raging sinus infection, on day 3 of antibiotics, so my husband is making a roast.

We used to smoke a turkey, which was tasty but we now do a prime rib, which is scalable based on how many people you have. We smoke that and no one complains about turkey not being served.

We usually make prime rib for Christmas dinner, but we've never tried smoking it. My husband got a smoker a few years ago and was smoking everything for a while. I don't think he used it once this year. It's going to be too cold for any outside grilling or smoking until next spring. Maybe I can have him try it then.

For what it is worth, they have some great gadgets where you can remotely monitor the cooking so you don't have to go outside as much. But yeah, it sounds like you're in the Detroit area so I'm sure it is very cold....

I used to give in and let them have some, then I dealt with two separate episodes of pancreatitis. One was a foster dog who I suspect was fed bacon. He woke us up at 3:00 in the morning with blood coming out both ends. That was a pulse-pounding ride to the emergency vet with him wrapped in a towel in my lap. He survived but had to go on a special diet for the rest of his life. The other was my sweet little Gidget McFidget. She kept pacing with her back hunched, and she shook uncontrollably when I held her. I managed her pain with some meds from a recent dental cleaning and got her to the vet later. Now she only gets her regular diet, no outside snacks. After those experiences, I find it's better to endure the puppy dog eyes than to risk having another such event.

And it's low sodium. Perfect! I'm supposed to limit my sodium intake, so this fits right in with my eating habits.

I hear you. Your day sounds perfectly cozy. My husband insists on turkey, so he ordered a smoked turkey this year. I hear it tastes like ham. Whatever. There will be three: the two of us and our son. We will visit our daughter and her family on Saturday. Our adult children are estranged from each other; the little fuckers. One wants to make up, the other says not yet. This happens in families after suicide: our eldest son took his life in 2011. It's like heartbreak on top of heartbreak.

Oh my goodness. I'm sorry you have to deal with both losses. I hope, in time, they reconcile.

I've never had smoked turkey. Please report back with how it tastes.

Last Thanksgiving I prepared an Italian feast. We had just returned from a wonderful trip to Italy a few months prior and being 1/2 Italian, it felt right. This year we are back to a traditional Thanksgiving feast - turkey and the trimmings, but it’s a family potluck so I’m just bringing cranberry sauce and a big harvest salad. Happy Thanksgiving all - no matter how you celebrate.

I would much rather have a lasagna than a turkey!

I think we're going to a local gourmet market in the next day or two to pick out what we want for Thanksgiving. I was thinking of a roast, but I know they have pre-made lasagna in their deli department.

I also did chicken parm and tira misu for dessert.

Enjoy your day. There is no rule that you have to eat turkey. Enjoy the football game. I personally am not a fan of a thanksgiving table and was thinking of ordering indian food since we save chinese food for Christmas😊
