Today, January 20, is a national holiday, commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is a day of service and reflection. There will be parades and gatherings aimed to engage individuals in meaningful activities that reflect on Dr. King's vision of equality and justice for all.
Every major city will host events to celebrate his legacy and bring together people in the spirit of service to uplift each other. For one day, people will come together in the reflection of the values he wished to instill.
What then of the following 364 days? Will we carry on his legacy of service to each other?
One of his famous quotes about service to our fellow human:
Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.
Some of the greatest acts of our lifetime are done in service to others.
Tell me, what act of service will you do to celebrate his legacy?
If you are in need of ideas, look at your local food bank, soup kitchen, Meals on Wheels, homeless shelter, animal shelter, public library. The need is endless, but the supply is finite. Will you be one more teaspoon bailing out an ocean of need? Many hands make light work, and many spoons bail faster.
As MLK wisely said, “The surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others.”
Go make today a happy day for yourself and everyone around you. Celebrate all the things that are good in our world and work to fix the things that are not.
Well said
Mostly I’ll be working on contributing to a few charities; finally tackling a “crowd reading” assignment someone here on Substack started, to read and summarize the Project 2025 document, together; working on finishing up some interview questions that the writer of the “Social Issues in Song” writer asked me, so we can cross promote our socially-oriented blogs, and projects; getting some writer’s insurance so I can be a little more protected when I start writing about things that more directly relate to things that those in the current Administration, and other powerful figures, have done, on my publication; and maybe some other stuff if I can get to it.
